Need help making your emergency plan? Check out Public Alerts which feature some easy steps you can take to begin creating your emergency plan. During a disaster your top priority will probably be finding your loved ones which will become more difficult if and when phone service is disrupted. Make a reunification plan ahead of time and share it with your family so they all know how and where to meet up again.
Agree on Several Meeting Places.
You will likely choose ‘home’ as your 1st meeting point but what if it is not safe? Where would go next? Probably your neighbors house but what if their home is compromised as well? Choose a series of locations that radiate further from ‘home’ where you can expect to rally up and find each other again. Establish at least 3 meetup points and write them down on your worksheet. Be sure to share copies with your loved ones and consider leaving copies in my vehicles.
My plan goes like this: Home > Neighbor’s Home > Nearby City Park > Friend’s home a few miles away > Family member’s home across town > Family member’s home 1 hour away > Family member’s home out of state.
If you want to take your plan a step further…
Include printed maps with predetermined routes so you know where to look for loved ones between rally points.
Establish meeting points on both sides of the Willamette river. After the “Big One” expect bridges to be impassable.
If your emergency plan includes traveling great distances, preplan a route (or routes) and collect information about services along the way including hospitals, refueling spots, safe camping areas, pet-friendly hotels, emergency pet care etc. Don’t assume your phone’s map apps or internet will work.
Do your future self a solid and plan ahead. You’ll thank yourself later.
